Multi-Unit Mindset: The Emotional Strategies to Scale Without Losing Your Sanity

Scaling from a single-unit franchise to multiple locations isn’t just an operational challenge—it’s an emotional one. The fear of losing control, the struggle to trust managers, and the anxiety of stepping back from daily operations can keep franchisees stuck in place.

I know this firsthand.

In 2018, I opened my first Two Maids territory in St. Louis and quickly expanded to a second neighboring territory. I was hands-on, deeply involved in daily operations. Then, in early 2020, an unexpected opportunity arose—a chance to buy a Two Maids franchise in Boulder, Colorado, 800 miles away.

At first, I hesitated. How could I run a business that far away? But the business had strong top-line revenue and only needed a few tweaks to become consistently profitable. I loved the mountains, and I believed I could make it work.

So, I took the leap.

Then the nightmare began.

On March 15, 2020, the same day I officially took ownership, COVID exploded. Within my first week:
🚨 80% of recurring customers canceled indefinitely
🚨 One-time cleaning jobs disappeared
🚨 Sales plummeted 90%

What seemed like a great business opportunity instantly turned into a financial crisis I couldn’t have predicted. And just two months in, my manager quit.

At the same time, I still had my St. Louis territories—which were also struggling to survive the COVID downturn.

I was forced to figure out how to rebuild, manage remotely, and—more than anything—navigate the emotional challenges of scaling.

By taking things one day at a time, I made critical operational and leadership shifts. Most importantly, I grew to develop a multi-unit mindset, which helped me grow my sales while maintaining my sanity. I also realized how much having control over my emotions helped me lead my team better and acheive more success. I not only stabilized all my territories but eventually scaled to six locations across two states, generating several million in annual revenue.
